new, improved statues.
Not removal of old ones.
I'm not a fan of destroying history... There's some statues and place names that are not ideal, sure. It probably is not great to have places named for thugs like Picton... Erecting new memorials to James Cook seems pointless, and causes very legitimate offense to many Kiwis... But where's the line? It is impossible to know. Once we start ripping up our history, we'll soon find outselves in a situation where it is impossible to know where to stop - we'll have destroyed all the history that could have enlightened us.
Churchill was a racist, and generally, a bit of a dick.
Yet Churchill is also a huge part of why good prevailed over evil in the Second World War. He probably warrants a statue, and we probably should not destroy it.
